Suntop Lookout

Suntop was built originally in 1932 – it is what is called an “L-4” lookout cabin that is 14 x 14’.   Until 1956, there was no road to the top—all supplies were brought up to the lookout by backpack or mules. It was used as an Aircraft Warning Service site in WWII.

In 1986 the lookout underwent major refurbishment and was placed on the rock foundation that it sits on now.  Suntop is registered as a National Historic Fire Lookout.

In the future, Suntop will be receiving some updates that include making the access trail to the lookout ADA compatible and improving ADA access to the lookout itself, while preserving the iconic look of the lookout.

Suntop is reached by driving up Forest Road 7315 to a parking area at the top of the peak, then walking up a rocky 50 yard trail to the lookout.  Note that FS7315 is gravel and very narrow and the parking area at the top is fairly small.  There is a gate just below the lookout that is open from 8 am to 8 pm when staff are present.  During busy weekends the gate may be closed when parking is full or special events are happening.

Suntop is currently staffed from approximately mid-June to late September.   Visitors are welcome to come visit the cabin 8 am to 5 pm when the lookout is staffed.   Besides wonderful views, Suntop has a fabulous picnic area with tables and a vault toilet.  There is no potable water available at the lookout or in the area.   Camping is not allowed at the lookout itself, but is available a short distance down the access road, as well as at serviced Forest Service campgrounds at The Dalles and Silver Springs.    A Northwest Forest Pass is required to drive to and park at Suntop.
